A buddy of mine was playing EVE and got a mission where a Gallente spy had deployed nanites that were destroying a coating on ships that reduced signature radius.
Well I think this would make a great Dust equipment! It would have a low visual cue and anybody who walking into the radius has their profile increased by +X amount or +X%. It's not a remote sensor so it doesn't make them show up on your tacnet but instead makes them more vulnerable to being scanned. |

anyways, Gallente would just have a deployable noise maker. set it down, and it makes a high frequency (or low one) sound in many directions, messing with any suit or active scanning attempted in a area. nanites don't really make sense for it, as they don't create noise.
It was a Caldari mission, he had just completed enough missions so it was one that greatly boosts your standing. The nanites the Gallente spy had used were slowly eating away at a coating on the ships surface that reduces signature radius (Purely story telling, there is no actual in game mechanic that does this) and they needed him to fetch the counter-nanites. So while the nanites weren't creating noise, they were making the ship louder by stripping it of it's coating. |

Since they're a deployable (and thus static) piece of equipment that only helps you within a set small radius (either the AoE for the equipment for active scanners or your own passive radius if at your own feet), maybe they could stack as well?
To shape future ideas I was thinking of how/if you get feedback about it. Should it pop up like getting ammo or should it not pop up at all? Should it be a deployable equipment or a mobile effect? Or should it come in several forms with different properties? And how should it be countered or undone?
Ideas: The deployable form would have a very low visual cue and would not inform you that your profile has been increased. It would increased the profile at intervals like a nanohive restoring ammo and have a finite nanite count so better models would increase dB increase, interval speed, and nanite count.
OR
The equipment could have a higher visual clue and inform you of it's effect but once you enter it's aura it continues to raise your dB, even after you leave it's immediate effect (the nanites are still on you). The longer you stay in the primary aura there is a exponential increase in dB gain once you leave. Upon entering the aura you gain +2 dB every 5 seconds, for every 3 seconds you remain in the primary aura it gains an additional +1 dB to the effect.
OR
The mobile version would put forth a dusty looking cloud (the nanites) with a modest number of uses (6+?). The nanite cloud would last for about a minute or so with a smaller radius than the deployable version. If you enter the cloud it would rapidly increase your dB but you would get a warning that you are being affected, a flux grenade would be able to clear the cloud.
Counters: Ultimately the more potent the effect, the easier it should be to get rid of.
Rep tool: It's affecting armor so clearly a rep tool should be able to fix it. I am not a fan of this because a single person carrying a rep tool in a squad can quickly and easily negate the effect.
triage nanohive: It repairs armor and the nanites could undo what the other nanites did as they are both operating at the same level. It isn't as easy of a fix because it requires someone to deploy an equipment that they have a limited number of just to get rid of the effect. Can also give away position(ish) if an ally scans the equipment.
Resupply depot: This is the one I prefer. It forces the person to make a choice, do I push ahead to get as far as I can while my dB is still low or do I head back to undo the effect? The limited number and locations makes it a tactical choice they have to make although it also can severely disrupt a play style due to the amount of effort needed to undo the effect. |

Keep in mind that scouts have better passive scan precision that the rest of the classes and the lowest profiles in the game. A deployable equipment item that gradually diminishes profile dampening every time you pass over it can allow a sneaky scout to better spot OTHER sneaky scouts (assuming they are dumb enough to pass over the equipment without noticing).
This can also be something for the Caldari Scout in particular since we now know that the upcoming Caldari Scout will be the Cat to the Gallente Scout's mouse thanks to its bonus to passive scan precision. A very good piece of equipment that complements the Caldari Scout.
The best locations to put these items in would likely be corridors, near key objectives, or near entrances where players are very likely to pass through.
Your right, it probably would end up being more of a Caldari equipment than Gallente. Shame because there is already going to be more equipment for the Caldari than any other race (Cloak, Nanohive, & Injector) where as the Gallente only have the scanner. |
